Research and field experience

Main research field: Antarctic glaciology and climatology. Various publications on climatic relations between northern and southern hemisphere, and changes in glacier mass with time and sea level effects.

Numerous research projects in Norway and in the Arctic (Svalbard, Jan Mayen, Franz Josefs Land). 15 field seasons in Antartica, with responsibility for all major Norwegian expeditions 1976-1993.

International functions include:

Member of Norwegian Delegations to Antarctic Treaty meetings for past 20 years.
Vice-President of SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research), 1994-98
Chairman, Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf Project, 1993-
President of Nordic Branch of International Glaciological Society (IGS). Member of
Council of IGS for seven years, including three years as Vice President.
Member of Executive, European Polar Board, 1996-

Selected research-related activitites

Chairman of organizing committees for five international research conferences;
member of organizing comittees for several others.
Published approx. 90 scientific articles.
Presented papers at more than 60 international conferences
Initiator of Norsk Bremuseum (Norwegian Glacier Centre), Fjaerland, Sognefjord, and of Polaria, Tromsų.
